Own the Clinch is a small-group seminar taught directly by Professor LaRosa, focused on developing control, balance disruption, and takedown ability from standing entanglements. Drawing on Judo, Greco-Roman, Sambo, and Freestyle Wrestling, this course emphasizes efficient mechanics and repeatable systems to establish dominance in the clinch.
Block 1 – Stance, Positioning & Grip Fighting
This block establishes the foundation of clinch work through stance, posture, and movement. Students will focus on grip fighting and hand positioning, with an emphasis on establishing “positive grips” that create control and set up takedown opportunities. Attention is placed on balance, base, and winning inside position.
Block 2 – Defensive Reactions & Offensive Conversion
This block focuses on using your opponent’s actions as opportunities. Students will learn how to recognize and respond to common grips, pressure, and positional threats, then convert those defensive reactions into offensive setups. Emphasis is placed on timing, redirection, and the use of incoming force to create kuzushi and gain an advantage.
Block 3 – Takedown Integration & Execution
The final block integrates all previous concepts into takedown execution. Students will work through a blend of techniques derived from Judo, Greco-Roman, Sambo, and Freestyle Wrestling, applying them in controlled, progressive resistance. Emphasis is placed on timing, efficiency, and clean execution under pressure.
